At the 4th annual LGBT Pride Celebration at the Pentagon on June 9, 2015, the Secretary of Defense, Ash Carter, announced that sexual orientation would now be part of the Military Equal Opportunity Program. This change in position by the DoD became effective  June 8, 2015. The DoD just published a briefing card explaining why the change was made, and what the intent of the changes were in insuring a diverse force. The Department of Defense has lifted the long standing ban on service by transgender citizens. This has been a thoroughly researched and vetted decision. The Department has issued both a press release and a memo on the new policy.
